This Year’s Virginia Film Festival Promises Its Most Outstanding Edition to Date

Virginia Film Festival

The 39th Virginia Film Festival is just around the corner, set for October 21-25, in Charlottesville, Virginia. The autumn leaves will not be the only thing changing in the hosting college town, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, as this year’s VAFF seems poised to be one of the buzziest editions to date, celebrating some of the year’s most highly anticipated new movies along with plenty of hidden gems to discover.

A program of the University of Virginia, the festival begins on Wednesday, October 21, with Jesse Eisenberg’s uproarious The Debut, already a proven crowd-pleaser on its fall festival tour, as the Opening Night Film. The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd is set as the Saturday Centerpiece title, with actor-turned-director Tim Blake Nelson on hand to accept the festival’s Virtuoso Award. Closing out the festival will be 1 15 41 Tragedy to Triumph, a documentary which chronicles UVA’s football team across several seasons in the aftermath of the tragic shooting that killed three of its players in 2022.

‘The Debut,’ A24

The festival is set to screen more than 120 new titles this year, many of which have already distinguished themselves as awards-season frontrunners, including Club Kid, La Bola Negra, and Wild Horse Nine. Arthouse-minded festival-goers will have plenty of under-the-radar movies to see too, like The Blood Countess, starring Isabelle Huppert as the infamous Elizabeth Báthory, or Valeska Grisebach’s Cannes winner The Dreamed Adventure, recently announced as Bulgaria’s Best International Feature submission for the upcoming Academy Awards. VAFF’s programming explores a diverse range of themes, from Black Excellence to Music on Film to LGBTQIA+, offering unique titles for almost any movie lover.

Apart from the great movies, the VAFF 2026 lineup features four panels that offer a glance behind the curtain into film production and preservation, along with ticketed opportunities to attend live podcast recordings, one of which includes IndieWire’s Screen Talk, where the co-hosts will be joined by filmmaker James Gray, recipient of this year’s Outstanding Achievement in Directing Award for Paper Tiger, also screening at the festival.

In a year when many major film festivals were embroiled in controversy (Berlinale and TIFF) or deemed “weak” years due to their Official Selections (Cannes and Venice), regional film festivals like VAFF have even more opportunity to shine, despite their much smaller scale. The Virginia Film Festival boasts a laid-back atmosphere boosted by its picturesque setting, and an affordable, easy-to-navigate ticketing system that makes it much more accessible for its attendees. 2026’s higher-profile VAFF feels like a possible response to Middleburg Film Festival, Virginia’s other major movie event of the year, which has moved to the periphery of awards chatter thanks to its starry attendees and well-backed sponsors. Having experienced both festivals over the years, I would say VAFF’s vibe feels much more democratic and welcoming than Middleburg's, where extremely wealthy patrons treat the festival more like a social event than a cultural one.

Tickets for the 39th Virginia Film Festival go on sale Friday, October 2 at noon. Continue reading to check out all of the award recipients of this year’s edition:
